Tougaloo holds 'Justice for Trayvon' rally

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

People across the nation are reacting to the not guilty verdict handed down in the George Zimmerman trial, including here in central Mississippi.

A 'Justice for Trayvon' rally was held at Tougaloo Park Sunday afternoon in Jackson.

More than 30 people attended the rally to show support for Trayvon Martin's family.

Zimmerman claimed he shot the Florida teen in self defense. The case captured the nation's attention for months. Organizers say the country should engage in non-violent conversation about every issue or disagreement, not just racial profiling, in order for a community to grow.

"The key thing is being able to talk to somebody. Being able to communicate with them on any level. If you've got a problem going on in your neighborhood and you've never spoken to the folks that may be causing the problem, then that's the first problem there. You have to be able just to talk to somebody," said George Patterson, organizer event.

People also spoke about race and the justice system, and improvements that can be made.

The rally was held as part of a Greek Weekend at Tougaloo, along with other activities.
