GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The boys and girls of summer are a big hit with the July economy on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This month features five major baseball and softball tournaments in South Mississippi.
The first pitch for one big youth baseball event was thrown out today at the Gulfport Sportsplex. Teams from Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and Florida are competing.
The boys' parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles are bringing themselves and their money to the coast. One parent from the Oak Mountain, Alabama team told WLOX News her friends have already spotted the nearby outlet mall, are checking out area restaurants and plan to take several families to Beau Rivage tonight for the Funambula show.
Otherwise, they'll be at the Sportsplex, cheering as loud as they can, while hiding under tents and umbrellas to stay cool during these sweltering South Mississippi days.
