JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Giving blood probably isn't your idea of summer fun, but you've heard it before, every time you give, your unit of blood helps three hearts beat a bit better.

"It's a simple process you do to save lives. It's safe to you and safe to the donor," said Tony Bahou from Mississippi Blood Services.

Bahou said compared to this time last year donations are significantly down.

"We're down 1,000 donors from last summer which is significant because you can save up to three lives its almost 3,000 lives impacted," said Bahou.

While all blood types are needed regularly, B+, B- and O- are extremely low on shelves. On Friday morning there were about 15 units of B+ blood. Ideally 64 units should be on hand at a minimum.

Summer months also pose another challenge to receiving blood donations. With more drivers, especially teens on the road, the likelihood of a jump in traumatic accidents goes up. Every day the blood center needs at least 251 donors to keep their blood supply stocked.

"You see the impact. We go through a lot of blood everyday and over 100,000 units last year alone," said Bahou.

If saving lives isn't enough to get you to donate, maybe winning a brand new Jeep Wrangler will persuade you to give. Tonya Toles won last year's "Road to Life" truck by donating blood and this year you can do the same.

"It's a great car for a teenager to have; a college student, anybody really," said Bahou.

All you have to do to qualify to win the Jeep is donate blood over the next several weeks.

The "Road to Life 5" giveaway is September 6. For more information go onto the Mississippi Blood Services website.
