Gautier drug bust nets 250 pounds of pot

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

The first what could be several drug related arrests was made in Gautier.  The South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team (MET) worked with Gautier Police to search for and then confiscate 250 pounds of marijuana hidden in the sleeper compartment of an 18 wheeler.

Investigators said that vehicle belonged to Robert Bobby Sumlin II.  According to a news release, Sumlin was arrested Wednesday and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

MET agents believe the marijuana has a street value of approximately $200,000.

MET members say Sumlin's arrest may be the first of many linked to a drug trafficking organization.  According to MET's Keith Havard, "This whole operation wasn't just one individual."

The MET director wouldn't say just how many additional people might be tied to this case.  He did confirm the other suspects may have ties to other areas, and other states.  Consequently, federal agents may join this investigation.

The South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team is comprised of agents from the Pascagoula, Gautier, and Moss Point Police Departments.
