Lesbian Biloxi couples seeks marriage license in "We Do" campaign

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Surrounded by family, friends and representatives with the campaign for southern equality, Candy Dalton, 43, and Sabrina Tiedt, 33, made their way to the Harrison County Courthouse. The two women were hoping to get a marriage license.

"We gather today to celebrate love," said Executive Director with the campaign Jasmine Beach-Ferrara as she blessed their efforts. "God, we ask that you keep all of us safe and give us the strength to keep going."

Then, the couple went inside with family behind them all the way. They filled out the necessary paper work. Then, they hoped.

"Marriage must be between a man and a woman," said the Circuit Clerk. "I am denying the license to you at this time."

It was a response the couple said they fully expected, but it didn't make those words any easier to hear.

"We can't get married?" asked Candy Dalton. "I mean we live together in a family and we're committed to each other. We would like that to be legally recognized."

They're not alone. They're just one of the many couples who have sought guidance and support from the campaign for southern equality in the 'We Do' effort.

"Today's actions shines a light on the fact that gay and lesbian and transgender people live here in the Gulf Coast region and they call it home, very proudly," said Beach-Ferrara. "They live full lives and yet they're second class citizens."

The campaign moves across the South with peaceful protests to unequal treatment. Even though Dalton and Tiedt didn't get a formal legal document to signify their commitment to each other, they said they still feel like they accomplished a lot. And they're not stopping their fight.

"I'm so grateful that we had the opportunity to standup to say that we want to get married and we have every right to get married," said Dalton.
