Vicksburg Aldermen reject mayor's appointments

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The city of Vicksburg's Police Chief and Fire Chief will remain in place, despite the new mayor's recommendations.

Mayor George Flaggs presented nominations for these positions to the Board of Aldermen, but his choices were rejected.

Flaggs says he thinks its unfair that he's not able to select his own administration, but if the citizens want the city run by aldermen, then he will comply and do the best job he can with the officials currently in place.

The mayor also says the city's debt raises a major concern for him.

"We're approaching a million dollars in debt because of overtime and some other things," said Flaggs. "Seventy-two percent of this budget is in salary. That's unfortunate and necessary. You can't be fiscally responsible with that kind of debt".

George Flaggs won the June mayoral election. For the time being, Police Chief Walter Armstrong and Fire Chief Charles Atkins will remain in place.
