RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

People within a three mile radius of the city of Brandon will soon have a safe room to run to when severe weather is coming.

An 11,000 square foot community safe room is going up in front of the Multi-purpose Pavilion on Marquette Road.

Construction began about two weeks ago. The cinder block structure will withstand winds of up to 250 miles per hour.

The room will contain bathrooms and a kitchen is planned in a future phase of the project.

The room will hold 1,400 people and will double as a community room for all of Rankin County when it's not needed for emergency purposes.

District 3 Supervisor Greg Wilcox explains who's paying for it.

"It's a 95/5 match. Ninety-five percent from the Feds and five percent from Rankin County citizens. It's a $3.5 million building for the Rankin County citizens. It's about $172,000, we'll have to match with that," Wilcox said.
