MS ranks 38th in the nation for State Farm dog bite claims

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State Farm has released its annual list of the top states for dog bite claims, and Mississippi ranks 38th in the nation. State Farm has 16 reported dog bite claims in Mississippi in 2012, costing more than $173,000.

Nationwide, State Farm had 3,670 dog bite claims and paid more than $108 million.

The top 10 states for State Farm dog bite claims are:

  • California - 451 claims, $17.1 million paid
  • Illinois - 337 claims, $9 million paid
  • Texas - 236 claims, $4.3 million paid
  • Ohio - 235 claims, $5 million paid
  • Pennsylvania - 165 claims, $4.5 million paid
  • Michigan - 151 claims, $4.6 million paid
  • Indiana - 148 claims, $2.7 million paid
  • Florida - 123 claims, $7.1 million paid
  • Georgia - 121 claims, $3.3 million paid
  • New York - 116 claims, $6.4 million paid

The Insurance Information Institute (III) says over the last decade, the number of claims related to dog bites has remained basically flat, but the amount of money paid out has soared, accounting for more than one-third of all dollars paid out in homeowners insurance liability claims.
