LAUREL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A suspected burglar got a surprise when an employee of the company he was attempting to rob showed up with a pistol.

On Sunday, July 7, Michael Nelson Hicks, 22, of Laurel was inside Laurel Recycling, located at 24 Ross Johnson Rd. in Laurel, when an employee showed up with a pistol.

Jones County Deputy James Stiglet was advised by dispatch that a burglary was in progress and headed to the location.

When Deputy Stiglet and Deputy Rudolph arrived on the scene, they observed a Red Chevrolet Silverado sitting in the roadway in front of the business with the driver's side door ajar.  The deputies then climbed the gate, which was locked, and walked to the building where the employee and suspect were.

According to the Jones County Sheriff's Department, Hicks apparently gained entry into the building by prying open an exterior door.

Authorities said the employee lives on the property and heard the alarm going off. The unnamed employee went to the building to see what was going on.

Officials say the employee entered the building with pistol in hand and found Hicks standing in front of a key box on the wall near the office.

The employee held Hicks at gun point until the deputies arrived.

Hicks was charged with commercial burglary and taken to the Jones County Adult Detention Center.

Hicks appeared before Judge Howell Beech where his bond was set at $10,000.
