Northpark Mall and retail competition

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The face of shopping is changing in the metro with two outdoor malls and the outlets of Mississippi.

A new general manager recently took over Northpark Mall.

Michael Husser says indoor malls have to pay close attention to what customers expect in their shopping experience. He believes there is more impulse shopping at indoor malls. There is also competition.

Dogwood Festival Market in Flowood offers many of the same stores and construction is expected to be complete on the Pearl outlet mall in November.

"It's a very dynamic industry as a whole. When I look at the mall, we have many stores, there are a few stores that have left, but there are new stores coming in to replace those stores. As a whole, sales are up. The consumer is more inclined to spend money this year than they were last year," Husser said.

At least three stores are slated to open this year or early 2014.
