Girls enjoy engineering camp

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An engineering day camp for girls in Jackson continues to roll along. In fact, some of the projects are rolling.

This week, some of the girls have been making gravity cruisers, complete with a chassis, ballast, and other mechanical parts. Other projects include miniature solar cars and gliders.

300 girls are taking part in the camp at New Hope Baptist Church. The students work in groups so everyone has a hand in making each product.

On Fridays, the girls present their products in front of a judge's panel. They've learned an extensive technical vocabulary, and had fun at the same time.

"I built a solar car. What I learned is the spikes on the gear of the solar car are called teeth," said Felicia Sheriff, who is entering 5th grade.

"I was actually excited, and my mind was blown because I've never done anything like this before," said Makayla Fisher, who is entering 6th grade.

Next week, the girls will be making their own soaps and perfumes.
