JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Entergy customers are being warned of a scam in which victims are contacted over the phone and told their service is about to be disconnected.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the scammers are targeting Entergy customers in Louisiana, but there is a fear that the people behind the rip-off will begin to target Mississippi residents.

"We want people in Mississippi to know about potential scams before they hit our state," says John O'Hara, CEO of BBB serving Mississippi.

The scammers call consumers and claim that the customer's utility bill is past due and their service is about to be disconnected. The callers then offer several different ways for the victim to pay electronically.

Entergy states that while the company does place courtesy calls if consumers are at risk for disconnection, the calls are recorded and are not made by live customer service representatives. In addition, the utility company never demands immediate payment, according to information released to the BBB.

The company adds while customers do have the ability to pay utility bills over the phone, it is only through BillMatrix, a third party vendor, and not through Entergy employees.

Entergy customers who feel they may have been a victim of this scam can contact the utility company at 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749). The BBB also offers tips to help prevent consumers from falling victim to this scam.
