5 Things you should NEVER do in a hotel room

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

You've reached your destination and you just want to get in your hotel room and relax.

But, not so fast.

It's a lesson Page Quinto has learned from ten years of business travel around the country.

"If you stay at hotels a lot you want to be able to relax, lay in chairs and not have anything to worry about," said Picayune resident Quinto.

She now follows a routine, making sure her room is safe and clean. She says some call her a germaphobe, but she calls it learning from experience.

"So we're sitting there just talking, just late at night, and you can kind of see something just POP and I was like, 'Well, what was that?'" said Quinto. "Within seconds, we knew it was a bed bug."

"It's been in the media a lot about hotel and bed bugs," said Kenny Glavan, General Manager of Four Points Sheraton in Biloxi.

Glavan knows if travelers made a list of the top five things to watch out for in a hotel room, bed bugs would be number one.

"Usually, if there's evidence of bed bug intrusion in a room, you'd probably notice it fairly rapidly," said Glavan. "This age it could be transferred by someone traveling by airplane or bus or luggage or clothing."

Remember, private hotel rooms are surprisingly public.

"So two and a half people per room, times 30, times 195," said Glavan.

Glavan estimates in three months, 200 strangers will stay in the same hotel room and almost everyone will turn on the television.

That's why number two on our list is, don't use the remote control.

"I think that goes to sanitation, there's been a lot of hotels actually that have started bagging their remote controls," said Glavan. "You may want to bring your own sanitizer and just wipe it down so there is no question."

Number three is don't leave your valuables lying around.

"You have several options. You need to determine first of all, what the value is and what are the security measures you take," said Glavan. "A lot of people put it either in the luggage or put clothes over it. Put a couple of pillows over it. Hotels also actually, or some of them, provide in-room safes that you can put your luggage in, set your own combination."

Ensuring your personal safety may be most important. Using the 'Do NOT Disturb' sign and never revealing your room number are the fourth items on our list.

"In this day of electronic technology, your key becomes a key issue, if you will, of security," said Quinto.

If you are disturbed, remember number five, don't just open the door. Use the peephole.

Page Quinto has one more piece of advice that comes from her personal hotel horrors.

"One night, it's about midnight, and all of a sudden two people come walk into my room," said Quinto. "And they were as shocked to see me as I was to see them. So now routine one, I walk in the room, I bolt the door and I swing that little lock every single time."
