RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Families enjoyed themselves Thursday at the Fourth of July celebration at the Mississippi Crafts Center in Ridgeland.

The Choctaw Indians' Red Water Social Dancers came out to demonstrate traditional dance. The crowds also got to see some members of the craftsman's guild at work.

The Mississippi Craftsmen's Guild is made up of more than 400 craftsmen from 19 states selected by a jury review process.

Mike Thompson and his wife Michelle, of Thompson Farms in Raleigh, demonstrated how they cut and carve gourds, and transform them into elegant items.

"We're able to actually create value-added products, we grow the gourds on the farm, then we take the gourds, make useful items out of them or items that some can place in their homes," Mike Thompson says.

Visitors to the Center enjoyed learning about the different crafts and trades.

"We're checking out the dancing, live music, crafts, looking for something fun to do on 4th of July," says Michelle Ketcham of Jackson, who came out with her 2-year-old daughter.

"Just introduce them to all the crafts, things that are made by hand, throughout Mississippi and other states," said Tomeka Cheatham of Byram, who visited with her daughter and niece.

The Mississippi Craft Center was named "Tourist Attraction of the Year" in 2010 and 2011 by the Mississippi Tourism Association.
