Wesson runners start their holiday by dashing to the finish line

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The 33rd annual Wesson Memorial Run was held this morning in Ocean Springs. More than 600 runners participated in the event. The race is sponsored every year by the Gulf Coast Running Club and the Ocean Springs YMCA.

The race is named in honor of Doctor and Mrs. Ray Wesson who were big backers of the YMCA.

All the proceeds from the race go to further the programs offered by the YMCA, which includes scholarships for various programs. Race officials say this year's turnout was a record breaker.

The race is always held on the 4th of July except when the holiday falls on a Sunday, then the race is held on Saturday.
