JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A woman is facing charges after Transportation Security Administration officers intercepted a firearm at the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

According to TSA spokeswoman Sari Koshetz, the firearm was intercepted around 12:40 p.m. in a 50-year-old woman's carry-on bag.

Airport police arrested the passenger and charged her with carrying a concealed weapon, which is a misdemeanor, said Bonnie A. Wilson, Chief Operating Officer for Jackson Municipal Airport Authority.

According to Koshetz, in addition to criminal charges, passengers who bring firearms to an airport checkpoint face a civil penalty from TSA of up to $11,000.

Koshetz advises passengers to "unpack before packing to be sure you do not have prohibited items such as guns in your carry-on bag."

According to the TSA, domestic passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are properly packaged and declared.
