St. Patrick's new coach talks Fighting Irish football

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The last three years Tom Thompson was head coach at North Sunflower Academy in Drew, Mississippi.

When he became aware that the St. Patrick job was open, Thompson said he applied immediately.

"I knew right away that I wanted to be here." He added, " We have the athletes that we can build on, the facilities and l'm looking forward to the season.

19 members of the St. Patrick High School football team have been participating in off-season training.

Thompson grew up in Illinois and is retired from the military.

He said, "From Rockford, Illinois. I went to Boylin Central Catholic High School, a large Catholic school in Rockford and played football there."

He said he's retired military. "I spent 20-years in the military and retired last October. I played college in Illinois for two years and I knew then that I wanted to coach."

Thompson says the Fighting Irish will run the Pistol offense. "We're going to gear it down a notch and run a little bit more than St. Patrick has run in the past." "On defense we're going to run a five-man front to try to keep the ball out of the hands of the opposition and be aggressive."

Thompson and his Fighting Irish open fall practice on August 5th and kick off the 2013 prep season August 22nd in Hattiesburg.
