Female hiker dies in Grand Canyon National Park

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A hiker died deep inside Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona on Sunday, officials said.

Park officials said they were notified of an unconscious female hiker about three quarters of a mile up the South Kaibab Trail from Phantom Ranch.

Rangers responded, but were unable to resuscitate the victim, whose body was flown by helicopter out of the canyon.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The woman was in a group of five people on the first day of a multi-day back country hiking permit. The other members of the party were flown by the National Park Service to the South Rim yesterday evening.

The South Kaibab is a steep, exposed trail, and the high temperature for Phantom Ranch yesterday afternoon was 113 degrees, park officials said.
