Hinds County names two interim supervisors

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Robert Walker will fill the unexpired term of former District 4 Supervisor Phil Fisher, who is now Mayor of Clinton.

Walker is no stranger to local government work. He served as Chief Administrative Officer in the City of Jackson under Mayor Frank Melton. In the late 1980's he became Vicksburg's first black mayor, and served as mayor three times during stints that did not run consecutively. He's also a former Warren County Supervisor. Walker is retired, but ready to serve Hinds County for four months.

"I've got to get out, cover the land, talk to some people, see what the issues are. I want to visit with Mr. Fisher when he has time," he says. "I'm interested in jobs and doing things to improve businesses and empower people economically."

Al Hunter is a contractor by trade, and a newcomer to politics. He has taken over the District 2 seat until November, replacing Doug Anderson, who passed away.

"Some friends, my colleagues, think I could fill this position because I represent and live in District 2," he says. "I also hope we can do things to improve our jail and bring down taxes, increase the school system."

Neither Walker nor Hunter plan to run for the permanent supervisor post.
