TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Tempe woman was seriously hurt after a fire tore through the house she was in Saturday afternoon.

"Great big, heavy, thick black smoke coming from the roof of the house," a neighbor named Mary said as she described what she saw from her home.

John Valenzuela, assistant chief of the Tempe Fire Department, said they got the call just after 2 p.m.

When crews arrived at the home on E. Gaylon Drive, near McClintock and Broadway, the fire was kicking up heavy smoke and flames, he said.

"Our crews made a rapid, aggressive initial attack – at which point in time they were able to locate a victim and execute a successful rescue," said Valenzuela.

The victim was taken to Maricopa County Medical Center's burn unit in critical condition.

Meantime, Mary told CBS5 News crews knocked down the flames incredibly fast.

"One minute it (fire) was there," she said. "The next minute it was gone. They did a phenomenal job. We have the best fire department in Tempe I've ever seen in my life."

Valenzuela said the cause of the fire, which was contained to the one house, is under investigation.
