Waterfest kicks off Rez's Independence Day festivities

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Independence Day celebrations got underway Saturday at the reservoir with Waterfest kicking off all the fun.

Families enjoyed a day along the shore at Old Trace Park where they participated in water themed activities.

This is the seventh annual Waterfest.

It was held this year in conjunction with the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District and the Barnett Reservoir Foundation.

The free event was kid friendly.

You could get up close and personal with reptiles and other wildlife.

There was face painting, rocket building, water slides and much more.

Food vendors were on site, and there was live music.

The event was also an opportunity to learn more about the reservoir and the importance of keeping the local drinking water source safe.

"It's an economic driver and it's a huge recreational source, and so now we're out here with the different exhibitors, different resource agencies and some of our non-profits out here teaching people how they can protect our environmental resources," said Waterfest spokesperson Dr. Donetta Weatherspoon.

National recording artist Steve Azar was the headline concert act.

The evening's festivities also included a lighted boat parade.
