Corps of Engineers has new commander

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Colonel John W. Cross is the new district commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg. In an elaborate ceremony, he took over command from Col. Jeffrey Eckstein.

Col. Eckstein was in charge through the record flood of 2011, when all of the levees managed by the corps held.

The Vicksburg district includes 68,000 square miles in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, with 460 miles of levees.

Col. Cross is a native Mississippian and 1987 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi.

"When you are active duty in the army, you serve the nation as a whole, you serve a lot of people," said Colonel Cross. "But it's a rare opportunity where a military officer gets to come home and serve those people that he grew up with and influenced his life, and made him what he is."
