BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Byram's first elected mayor and board of aldermen took the oath of office Thursday evening. Mayor Richard White was the first to be sworn-in. The seven aldermen, which includes four women, were immediately followed. Residents and family members packed city hall for the event.

White says the previous administration laid the foundation for the new city leaders to improve Byram. He has a number of goals for his term, including economic development, city improvements, and working with the new board.

"We got problems with streets. We don't have enough places for our kids to play, and yes we are going to be working on those issues," said White. "We're meeting Monday at 7 o'clock and I'm gone be working with them, and I'm gonna tell them my vision and then I'm gone have their input. And we're gonna do what we can afford."

The board meets the first, second, and fourth Thursday of each month.
