Parham Bridges improvements funding stalled

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson's Ward 1 Councilman Quentin Whitwell is concerned about a delay in funding for improvements to Parham Bridges Park in Northeast Jackson.

Whitwell says six months ago, he submitted a "Memorandum of Understanding" draft to the city attorney's office to get the ball rolling. Improvements will include four new tennis courts, a roof over four existing courts, and eventually ten more courts and expanding the walking trail.

The Councilman voiced concern at Tuesday night's Council meeting that funding for improvements to Thalia Mara Hall was on the agenda, but the Parham Bridges matter was left off.

Whitwell is optimistic that incoming mayor Chokwe Lumumba will move the project forward.

"I look forward to visiting with him about it," said Whitwell. "Hopefully he will issue the Memorandum of Understanding shortly, because we have over $200,000 already raised, many more thousands pledged."

Councilman Whitwell hopes the first phase can be completed this coming Fall.
