JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., announced a proposal Tuesday for a Jackson Convention Center hotel.

The Mayor is proposing that the city lend $9 million to Robinson Callen Development, which is based in Tampa, FL, to build the $60 million hotel. The developer would pay back the city when the hotel is complete, according to the mayor.

"It will bring more events here, more tax dollars, create more jobs.  It's also going to have a spill over effect.  I think you're going to see this area down here really boom," says Johnson.

The proposed hotel would have 305 rooms and would be located across Pascagoula Street from the Jackson Convention Center.  The hotel would create more than 100 jobs, and even more in the construction, which will take about two years.

"We need to make sure that a lot of Jacksonians get jobs and they're anxious to make sure the quote "minority" workers are employed by the project as far as the contractors and sub-contractors, because all that does is expand our economic base," said Jackson Mayor-elect Chokwe Lumumba.

The Jackson Redevelopment Authority will have to approve the plan be it's presented to the council.
