Hopkins Co. soaked with over five inches of rain

Posted: Updated:
HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -

On Monday, roads and streets flooded all over the Tri-State; from Madisonville to the east side of Evansville, and a lot of places in between.

Hopkins County was soaked with reports of over five inches of rain.

Lots of pictures were sent in from viewers of flooding in their area.  But the most dramatic images we've seen so far are from Madisonville, where many there will be dealing with the effects of this flood for weeks to come.

It's not something you see everyday. Airboats in a mall parking lot, searching for anyone who might be trapped inside a vehicle submerged in floodwater. In all, Madisonville police say they had to rescue 11 people from their vehicles all over town.

Then there's Kim Harper who is on a rescue mission of her own. She's trying to save any belongings from a home that she rents to a man who is on vacation in Mexico.

"We broke in with a crowbar to get into his house to turn the breakers off, but you know, you do what you do when it's your house. It's your investment and you want your tenants to be taken care of good," Harper says.

At least five houses on Stagecoach Road quickly flooded. Harper believes more could have been done to this subdivision to prevent this type of damage from happening.

"You take that chance when you buy homes and you have flooding issues and grating issues.  Subdivisions that are built that engineers, that wasn't engineered right and they didn't take care of grating and water flow," Harper says.

With the water still flowing, Harper focused on saving her tenant's belongings, including a prized collection of 3,000 baseball cards.

"I'll deal with it and be happy. It could be a lot worse," Harper says.
