Authorities investigating abandoned boat in Pascagoula

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Waves splash the partially sunken 22-foot sailboat stuck on the rocks at Pascagoula's Front Beach on Monday. The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) learned of the boat after receiving a tip late last week.

DMR Public Relations Officer Melissa Scallan says DMR is working with the Coast Guard to investigate the mysterious boat.

"The marine patrol ran the boats registration number to find the owner. It's registered to someone out of Gautier," Scallan said.

However, Scallan said no one has answered the phone number and no one was at the address that the boat is registered under.

"They are still trying to locate the owner to get it removed, but haven't been successful," Scallan said.

The boat has to be sunken for 30 days before it can be considered derelict, according to officials. Some people who have seen the boat told WLOX they are concerned about the boat because there are kids that play near the boat and they could get hurt.

"I don't know if the boat is still useable. It looks like it could be, but I'm not sure," Scallan said.

If you know or think you might know who owns this boat call DMR at 228-374-5000.
