RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Sheriff's Department has released the name of the inmate who was killed in an apparent fight with his cell mate over the weekend.

The inmate has been identified as 56-year-old David McLaurin. Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart said McLaurin died from head trauma as a result of an assault.

The inmate suspected of killing McLaurin during an altercation Saturday is 50-year-old Elton O'Neal McClaurin, according to Othor Cain, Director of Media & Communications with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

"On Saturday, June 22, during regular shift monitoring, one of our detention officers discovered an inmate lying on the floor. Upon checking, the detention officer noticed that this inmate was unresponsive," Cain said.

Cain said the officer did attempt CPR and notified the medical unit.

McClaurin has been in jail for two years on a business burglary charge.

"As we move through this investigation, additional charges will be forth coming including the possibility of homicide against McClaurin," Cain added.

This is the second time this week violence has broken out at the Raymond Detention Center.

Thursday, there was a confrontation between four or five inmates over some contraband. One inmate, Joshua Nelson, was stabbed and received stitches at a local hospital. The other inmates received some minor cuts and bruises.

The detention center was placed on lock down following the fight Thursday night.

Hinds County District 5 Supervisor Kenneth Stokes says he wants someone to run the jail other than the Sheriff's Department.

"I think it's time we showed the citizens of this county that we recognize there is a problem and by declaring a state of emergency and trying to hire someone," says Stokes.

Jody Owen of the Southern Poverty Law Center disagrees.

"That would ensure more violence occurs, more deaths occur, more rapes occur.  We've seen that in this state and across the country," Owen said.

Owen says the answer is better training for jailers, and more supervision for prisoners.
