'5K For the Fatherless' draws large crowd

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds of runners ran with all their might to help bring foster children into loving and caring homes.

Earlier Saturday, 450 runners took part in the "5-K For the Fatherless." The race was a fundraiser for the non-profit group "200 Million Flowers."

The organization is a domestic adoption agency that helps find families for foster children. They also partner with the crisis pregnancy center. Proceeds from Saturday's run will help recruit families to consider adoption and fostering children.

"We've been able to have a memorandum of agreement with the state of Mississippi to create a heart gallery to take pictures of kids that need a forever family and so part of the money raised today will go to create that gallery and then that will travel around the state to help create awareness for kids in foster care," said 200 Million Flowers consultant.

Money raised from the race will also help pay for the living expenses for women receiving care from the crisis pregnancy center.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
