BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Byram police say a 30-year-old man accidentally shot himself with a .22-caliber pistol Thursday.

Byram Police Commander Ford Hayman said the shooting happened just before 7 a.m. when the man thought he heard someone knocking at the front door.

The man reportedly went to the door with the gun. When he didn't see anyone, he turned around and put the gun under him arm and accidentally pulled the trigger, according to Hayman.

The unidentified man was struck in the upper chest and shoulder area. The injury is non-life-threatening.

One neighbor said there are several men living in the house, and they usually keep to themselves.
