Old Fannin Road widening slightly behind schedule

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If it looks like the project to widen Old Fannin Road has stalled. That's because it has and you can blame it on the weather. But engineers believe they can get it back on track by working weekends.

Old Fannin Road is one of the busiest stretches of road in the metropolitan area, carrying 26,000 cars a day.   That is comparable to Old Canton Road, in northeast Jackson, but it is already five lanes.

The widening of old Fannin started October 5, 2012, and the contractor has 620 days to finish the job. They plan to reopen the road with five lanes in 2014.

Project engineer Alan Scott says the project is slightly behind schedule.

"It takes a lot more time when you have to keep two lanes of traffic open while you are working and we had heavy rain in the spring, but we believe we can make it up working weekends, which we are now doing," said Scott. "The quality of the dirt on the roadsides was not sufficient to be paved over because it had clay in it, so we have to bring in new dirt."

They believe Old Fannin Road can be reopened with five lanes by May 1, 2014.
