JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

When young African-American males feel empowered and supported by others, they're much more likely to succeed. That's why Blackburn Middle School in Jackson is launching a mentoring program beginning this Fall.

On Wednesday, the Jackson Public School District received a grant for $1,500. The cash will be used to provide mentors for 40 children.

Reena Evers-Everette, daughter of civil rights pioneer Medgar Evers, was on hand to announce the effort, which is part of the A-TEAAM, or Ambassador for the Evers Academy for African-American Males. The project comes as we mark 50 years since Evers was assassinated.

Evers-Everette says one-on-one mentoring of middle school boys reflects the spirit of what her dad tried to accomplish.

"We have to make sure they understand there is a support system, as we said earlier, a village. We need the total village to uplift," she explains.

JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray says the mentoring program is a step toward getting more African-American males to graduate from high school.

"It's already been noted that children, especially middle school students, are going to find a place to belong. So we would rather they belong to something a little bit more positive," Gray said.

The grant comes from the Terracon Foundation. Terracon Consultants is a nationwide geotechnical company with offices in Mississippi.
