JPD to drivers: Lock your doors and hide valuables

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police are increasing patrols this weekend at shopping centers, after seeing an increase in car burglaries.

Officers from several divisions are placing fliers on vehicles in north Jackson business areas.

They are targeting owners who leave valuable items or electronics out in the open.

JPD says it has seen a slight increase in car burglaries since school let out for the summer.

Police say it's as simple as locking your car and being careful about storing anything of value inside your vehicle.

"We're asking the public to help us out by securing their items in the trunks of their cars. A lot of people are under the misconception if they throw a towel or a T-shirt over that purse or that bag in the backseat that, that's gonna hide it, and the criminal element knows that and they are looking for something like that as well," said Jackson Police Commander James McGowan.

Police will also be looking for people attempting to break into cars in the shopping and restaurant parking lots.
