WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - The grand reopening of Buccaneer Bay Water Park in Waveland attracted hundreds of folks from Louisiana and Mississippi Thursday. The water park has been closed since being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Eight years later, a $5 million re-construction project has brought the park back.
"It's very awesome," said one young, Louisiana visitor.
"It's cool and I like it," another child said.
The Branch Family from Washington Parish, Louisiana has considered Buccaneer Bay a favorite summertime getaway for years.
"We've been waiting ever since Katrina for it to get back open," said Thomas Branch.
Thursday, they couldn't wait to dive in.
"We went ahead and bought the season tickets because my family has a camp probably about 15 minutes from here," said Lorraine Branch.
The wavepool offers visitors eight different waves to ride, including a giant tidal wave. Eight years ago, the pool only pushed out one wave.
"It's got big waves," said Louisiana resident Landon Breaux.
"The further you go out, the bigger the waves are. It's fun," remarked Thomas Branch.
Parents like Alan Russell say the park lives up to the promise of family fun.
"It's just a good place for us to come with our family. It's safe for the kids; we can let them get out and play and have a good time," said Russell.
Two-year-old Cole Retzler from Slidell found the perfect spot at the kiddie pool.
"So far our favorite part is the water bucket that keeps dropping water," said Cole's mom, Jessica Retzler. "We're going to be here three or four times a week, easy."
And that's the reaction park leaders were hoping to hear.
Buccaneer Bay Water Park is open seven days a week from 10am until 6pm.
