JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Residents of the Grand Chateau Apartments say the dumping that occurred there is the responsibility of the owners. They say a building maintenance worker actually dumped a load of shingles and other raw materials behind a dumpster at the apartments on Capitol street.

They are very concerned this could be a hazard to the children that live and play in the area.

"It's nasty, said apartment resident Adden Harris. "Kids round here that's a hazard. Kids round here they play They got nails and shingles. That is disgusting."

Managers at the apartment complex say they were using the shingles to fill in a pathway into the apartments, to cut down on trespassing.

"They were actually put there to build up, there's a ditch back there," said Apartment Manager Raynette Richardson. They were put there so we can put the shingles in there and put the dirt on top of it to fill in the landfill down there."

The city of Jackson department of code services says the shingles were not disposed of properly. They've already talked to the apartment owners, and plan to inspect the roofing materials in person.
