Jailer accused of smuggling contraband

YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Yazoo County jail guard is facing charges after allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband into the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility.

Yazoo County Sheriff's Department Chief Investigator Tommy Irvine says Thomas Jew, of Tchula, was arrested Tuesday and charged with smuggling.

He's accused of bring a cigarette lighter and nicotine into the prison.

Irvine said Sheriff Jacob Sheriff and the jail warden have "beefed up" security because there's been a problem contraband in the jail.

During a security check, another guard reportedly felt a strange object on Jew.

Jew has been released from jail on $10,000 bond.
