FOREST, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In Forest, Mississippi, the streets of the town are being decorated with chickens. But let's not get the cart before the horse or the chicken before the egg in this case, but go to the beginning.

The beginning of the decorative chickens is a building in downtown Forest. It's called Colbert Commons. It was originally a bank. Then it went through a series of incarnations and now is a community art gallery.

Patsy Nicholson is, among other titles, the curator of the gallery.

"It was our original intent to have a museum, but because that kind of thing doesn't happen overnight, we decided, some of us go together and we decided that we would use it as a showcase for art, by professional artists who have spent time in the city of forest," said Nicholson.

And even an art gallery doesn't happen overnight or without funds, so the Forest Community Arts Group got involved and tried to come up with a way to raise money for the gallery.

They took inspiration from Meridian to the east, who decorated their downtown with carousel horses along the lines of the ones on their antique Densel Carousel. So Forest decided to decorate their town with chickens.

"Of course, chickens is the big industry in Scott County," said Forest Community Arts President Mary Jo Walsh.

Local businesses, and even the city, bought chickens and had them decorated. And the profits go to the art gallery.

The brightly decorated chickens, 30 of them so far, give you something else to see when you drive through Forest.

"For one thing, it gives all the grandparents somewhere to bring their grandchildren," said Walsh. "That's kind of a silly answer but it's the truth. We're in the process of having a brochure published which will tell a little bit about Colbert Commons, a little about the art gallery. And a lot about the chickens."

They are all cleverly decorated and somehow tie in the sponsors theme. And to have to say that no two are alike probably isn't necessary.

It's a whimsical idea that colorfully exhibits civic pride and cultural interest. And it may even attract flocks of folks to Forest just to drive around and see if they can find all of them.

It's a bold, chicken idea to paint the town with color and put more art on the walls of the Colbert Commons Gallery at the same time.

If you take a stroll on the beach, chances are you might need to watch your step and it isn't because of the sea shells. A strong onshore wind has been pushing large jellyfish to the shore. These bigger jellyfish are called cannon ball jellyfish. Luckily, these jellyfish do not sting, but we may see more stinging jellys sooner than usual.
