Picayune woman charged with dumping puppies in Waveland

WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) -

A Picayune woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty after allegedly dumping a litter of puppies behind a Waveland business. Four of the pups died in the hot sun; three others survived.

Waveland Police Chief David Allen said the woman's name would not be released because threats have been made against her.

Investigators released pictures from a surveillance video showing a woman carrying a box believed to contain one adult dog and seven puppies. The animals were left behind Keith's Super Store on Kiln-Waveland Cutoff and Highway 603 Monday around noon. A store employee found them eight hours later while taking out the trash.

The surviving pups were taken to the Hancock County Animal Shelter, and could be adopted out as early as Friday. The adult dog ran after the woman's car as she drove away, and has not been found.
