PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Republican Chipper McDermott won reelection in Pass Christian Tuesday night with 69 percent of the vote. He defeated Joseph Piernas, a democrat city council member.
This is McDermott's third term as mayor. He told WLOX News recently that he decided to run again because there's still work to be done in the city's long recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Sales tax collections in the city just recently reached pre-Katrina levels.
"The fact that we're back on our feet, that's one thing. We've got a lot of things going on. We've got the new city hall, the police station. The harbor is down there. It's a big project down there, largest in the history of the city," McDermott said. "That's why I'm running again to try to finish out projects. We're working desperately trying to get a hotel into town we've wanted for a long time. It's moving along."
