DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) -

Thomas Schafer (R) won the Diamondhead mayor's race with 71 percent of the vote. Opponent John Fletcher (I) lost with 29 percent of the vote.

Schafer is Diamondhead's "first elected" mayor since Diamondhead became a city in 2012. Schafer will begin his new four year term as mayor on July 1.

Schafer told WLOX News some of his plans for Diamondhead. He also wants to lower taxes. He says the budget and spending is out of control in the city.

He and his wife Camille have one daughter named Caroline. He and his wife have lived in Diamondhead for 18 years. Schafer is founder and Vice President of Schafer Equipment & Construction, LLC, and has been active in the business for the past 13 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Mississippi.
