Summer feeding programs fill tummies and young minds

Posted: Updated:

Summer Feeding Programs have been a great help to parents over the past few years. It's a free breakfast and lunch program that serves hundreds of kids daily throughout the summer. The kids say mom really likes it, too.

"I really like it, because the food is great, and my parents really don't have to pack me a lunch anymore," LJ Henderson said.

The program began just after Hurricane Katrina. Program Director Saundra Isabelle has seen the numbers increase every year since it started.

"We are looking for participation from the community. The more we have, the happier we are," said Isabelle.

This year, Pass Christian has partnered with the local library to allow kids to have a free book daily. For every book they take, they are given a pass to redeem a free prize at the library. They hope this will encourage kids to read all summer long.

Schools offering the reading program include the Gulfport School District, Pass Christian School District and the Jackson County Civic Action Committee.
