HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Coast Electric Power Association and Singing River Electric are warning about a scam targeting their members in Mississippi, as well as residents in other states.
A Coast Electric member recently received a phone call from someone claiming to be a Coast Electric employee. That person said a balance was owed on the member's account and that it must be paid immediately to avoid disconnection.
The member was told they should get a money card from Wal-mart and call back with the card number. They were provided an 800 number to call.
The member knew there was no outstanding balance and called Coast Electric to confirm that they had not, in fact, made this call. Coast Electric said this is a known scam. Residents in other states have already been targeted, specifically Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia.
Friday afternoon, Singing River Electric Power Association announced that one of its members received a similar call.
"We urge our members not to respond to phone calls requesting payments where the caller provides them with a 800 number and requests payment with pre-paid cards," said assistant manager Mike Smith. "We also ask our customers to feel free, if they receive a call requesting information or action, to hang up and call Singing River Electric back to confirm the request."
You should also report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.
