Many Biloxi businesses favor baseball stadium plans

Many Biloxi business owners think having a baseball park on Highway 90 will be a home run for them and other businesses.

"That's what this area's about: People. We try to figure out a way to bring them in, not run them out," said Bobby Mahoney, owner of Mary Mahoney's Old French House.

Restaurants in downtown Biloxi know that an attraction, like a baseball park, could bring a great many people to their establishments, which is why they are in favor of the project.

Restaurant owner David Rothbart said he hopes it will concentrate the population that goes to the game to stay downtown and explore the different restaurants and nightclubs that are open after the game.

Mary Mahoney's, Half Shell Oyster House, and Adventures Pub & Spirits are just a few downtown restaurants in favor of the ballpark. Though they all have a strong local following, they say they wouldn't mind the new faces the ballpark could bring.

"It gives something else for everybody to do. And if everybody gets out, then they all come to the restaurants. If they all come to the restaurant, that definitely makes us happy over here," said John Graham of Half Shell Oyster House.

The stadium would be built across from the Beau Rivage parking garage. Thursday, Governor Phil Bryant will be in Biloxi to discuss the plans. The Biloxi City Council has already made clear its support for the project.
