WLOX Editorial: Proposed drone testing sites in South MS promise new jobs

Posted: Updated:

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAV's are big business and getting bigger in the United States and around the world. We support the Mississippi Development Authority's bid to make Camp Shelby and Stennis International Airport one of six commercial drone testing grounds in the country.

The technology is here. The FAA just needs sites to study the best and safest way to open national air space to commercial UAV's. There is potential for thousands of jobs in South Mississippi in this multi-billion dollar industry.

The sky is literally the limit when it comes to uses for these drones; from crop dusting to air searches for lost boaters in the gulf. But as the nation sets uses and regulations of the U.S. airspace, we hope safety will always be at top of mind.

We also hope regulators anticipate all the uses of this technology and protect our rights to privacy as these UAVs pass overhead.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
