Miss MS USA en route to Vegas

Posted: Updated:
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg native Paromita Mitra boarded a plane to Las Vegas on Wednesday in preparation for Miss USA festivities.

The aerospace engineering major at Mississippi State will be vying for the title as Miss USA. She thanks the state of Mississippi for living up to its hospitable reputation.

"I competed for Miss Mississippi USA in November, and it's just been an incredible journey," Mitra said.

Although she won the Miss Mississippi USA pageant in November, it has taken her years to get where she is today. She says it's all about being physically, spiritually, and mentally prepared.

Mitra stressed the importance of public service, saying helping others is necessary for living a fulfilling life.

"I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from girls that say they've never been told they're smart before," Mitra said.

She might look like a beauty queen, but she's smart, too.

"Currently, I'm a student at Mississippi State University studying aerospace engineering, and I love physics and math. It's fun," she said.

Mitra also mentions her Bangladeshi family, who will travel to Vegas to see her compete in Miss USA.

"I love seeing my family's reaction. There are 33 members of my family who will be in attendance, so that gives them an opportunity to hold signs that spell ‘Mississippi' three times," she notes.

Vote online at www.missusa.com and click the "contestants tab," then vote "Mississippi" to help Paromitra win the title as Miss USA. Tune into ABC on June 16th to watch the competition.
