Baseball will take a swing in downtown Biloxi

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

WLOX News has confirmed Governor Bryant will be in Biloxi on Thursday to announce plans for a baseball stadium across from the Beau Rivage parking garage.  Once the ballpark is constructed, the community is expected to lure a minor league baseball team to downtown Biloxi.

The Biloxi City Council has already expressed its support for a ballpark between Highway 90 and Howard Avenue.  Biloxi leaders are considering a bond in excess of $20 million to cover some of the construction costs.  WLOX News has been told the state of Mississippi is also expected to contribute money to cover the ballpark's construction costs.

The bond idea came up two weeks ago at a Biloxi City Council meeting.  "The opportunity to see this done in the city of Biloxi would be one of the best things since sliced bread," Councilman Ed Gemmill said that day.

At least two councilmen said the ballpark could give the city that extra push it needs to get back on track.  So, the investment could pay big dividends.  "Along with that, the governor's office will be kicking in about $15 million," Gemmill explained.  "Right now these are unknown exact figures. What have to get the rest of the intent as far as what they want to do and how its going to be developed. We will then come back to the council and have another vote on it."

More details about the downtown Biloxi baseball stadium will be released at 3:00 Thursday, when Gov. Bryant and leaders from Biloxi, Harrison County, and Beau Rivage hold a news conference on the land where the ballpark will be built.
