Slow start to 2013 too much for Southern Miss to overcome

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Despite a red hot run through Conference USA, and a nailbiting, 11 inning loss Sunday afternoon in the CUSA title game, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will not play another baseball game this season.  When the field of 64 teams was released on Monday, Southern Miss learned its 30-27 overall record wasn't good enough to play post-season baseball.

Nine teams from the SEC will play in the College World Series tournament.  Mississippi State is hosting a regional.  The three teams that will join the Bulldogs in Starkville are South Alabama, Mercer and Central Arkansas.

LSU is also a regional host.  The SEC tournament champs will welcome UL Lafayette, Sam Houston State and the Jackson State Tigers to Alec Box Stadium.

Ole Miss will be a two seed when it plays in the Raleigh regional.  North Carolina State hosts that regional.  The Rebels and the Wolfpack will be joined in Raleigh by William & Mary and Binghampton.

College World Series regional play begins this weekend.

    Between 500 to 600 high school football coaches from throughout the Deep South have converged at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino for the 55th annual Gulf Coast Coaching Clinic, which concludes on Friday.  Brett Favre had the high school coaches laughing when he took the podium Thursday morning.
