Vicksburg Military Park hosts events Memorial Day weekend

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Vicksburg Military Park continues to host a number of events this weekend, to commemorate the sesqui-centennial anniversary of the Campaign and Siege of Vicksburg.

Makeshift camps were set up Sunday afternoon, to give visitors an idea of how soldiers lived during the Civil War.

Folks also got a hands on look at what tools were used to survive. There was even a cannon firing demonstration.

The living history lesson is one of many events scheduled at the park as the country remembers the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

There was also a "Soldiers Through the Ages" program earlier Sunday.

Beginning at 7 p.m. this evening, the Jackson Mass Community Choir will perform at the Park Visitor Center.

Decoration Day or Memorial Day Remembrances occurred after the Civil War, one such place, recognized by the Library of Congress, is Friendship Cemetery in Columbus.
