KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A nurse who serves on the Kauffman Stadium K-crew was able to revive a 14-year-old girl who collapsed during Thursday night's game.

A second nurse who was attending the game with the girl and her family also gave aid.

The girl was dancing in the upper-deck stands when she suddenly collapsed during the bottom of the first inning. Sam Sapenaro had been entertaining fans in that section when she saw what happened. She immediately radioed for help and rushed to the girl's side.

She began to perform CPR after the girl's heart stopped beating.

An ICU nurse who was also with the girl and her family at the game sought help and performed efforts to get the girl's heart beating again.

The girl, who did regain consciousness, was rushed to Children's Mercy Hospital. Officials have not released her condition, but she apparently suffered a life-threatening episode.

The family has asked for privacy and that officials provide no details about the girl's condition.

"To say that it was fortunate this young woman from the K-Crew is also a registered nurse is an understatement," said Toby Cook, spokesman for the Royals. "She was there. She knew what to do. She provided comfort ... She went from K-Crew to nurse mode and stayed that way right up until the point the patient was transported."

Sapenaro happens to be a nurse at Children's Mercy Hospital where the girl's family is keeping a vigil by her side.

Information about the second nurse has not been released.

Sapenaro tweeted Thursday night, "Thank you so incredibly much for all your love tonight. I'm blessed to be surrounded by the best fans & co-workers in the world! #kcrewlove."

The K-Crew helps fire up fans between innings and toss out hot dogs and T-shirts to the crowd. The Royals played the Angels Thursday night.

The Royals had scheduled a 1 p.m. Friday opportunity for the media to interview Sapenaro. But after the girl's family asked for privacy, the Royals canceled the availability, KCTV5's Emily Rittman reported.

"The family, while they very much appreciate everyone's concern and have expressed their thanks to the people who responded to the incident last night, they are also asking for privacy," Cook said.

He said the Royals thoughts and prayers are with the girl and their family. And they are grateful that the right person with the right training was close.

"It was a heroic effort on her part to be able to respond that way and have her medical training kick in," Cook said."Had this happened somewhere else, it could have been a situation where nobody would have been there to help her."

First Aid is located throughout the stadium.

The girl's dance performance was shown on the stadium's oversized screen in the outfield, but her collapse was not.

Medical experts say they would like to see more folks take CPR training classes, which last about 30 minutes. They said it can save lives.
