COLD CASE: Moss Point reopens 2006 double homicide

Posted: Updated:
MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

Moss Point police have reopened a double murder investigation that's been considered a cold case for years. Though two people were charged with the murders back in 2006, lost evidence set them free.

For seven years, Mothers Melonee Wilson and Gwen Riley have shared the same heartache and pain of losing a son.

"It is the worst nightmare that I have had in my life," Wilson said.

According to police, 24-year-old Brandon Taylor and 26-year-old Gary Riley were both shot and killed while sitting in a vehicle in a Moss Point subdivision.

"It is very hard. It is devastating," Riley said.

Terrance Coleman and LeDerrick Brown were arrested and charged with capital murder, but they were never tried. Prosecutors released them because police lost crucial evidence and witnesses refused to testify.

"At one point, I thought no one cared but me and my family," Wilson said.

Now after years of disappointment, some good news for the families.

"We are reopening the case," Chief Keith Davis said.

Chief Davis was not over the department when the key evidence was lost. But he assured both families his team and the DA are committed to solving the case.

"We want to send a message that this case is not forgotten about," Davis said.

To make sure police crack this cold case, the Moss Point Board of Aldermen has given the chief the okay to use drug forfeiture funds to hire an additional law enforcement team to investigate.

"I am not here today to tell you that it is going to happen tomorrow, but I am here to tell you I am confident we will bring those responsible for the crime to justice," Davis said.

And both families will continue holding out hope until that day comes.

"I would just appreciate if they know anything to please come forward," Riley said.

"Because this was uncalled for, this was unprovoked, and it just shouldn't have been," Wilson said.
